The Ethical Legacy Will deepens relationships within a congregation — among people of the same generation, and across generations.
When people gather to share their stories, something specific happens: one person’s memory triggers another’s. A shared culture and shared time give people common points of reference, and as stories accumulate in the room, people discover how much they already have in common. Common experience reveals shared values, and shared values build community — with the synagogue as the place where it happens.
Programming:
- Lectures and Classes. Sponsored sessions on The Ethical Legacy Will — text study, methods, and techniques, including Video Ethical Wills.
- Workshops. Structured time to find what we share. Naming what we have in common is what turns strangers into friends, and the synagogue becomes a social home for people building those friendships.
- L’Dor VaDor — Connecting the generations. Young people use video to capture the life stories of parents and grandparents, building a bridge between generations that rarely gets built any other way.
A synagogue traditionally serves three purposes as a:
- House of gathering (Beit Knesset)
- House of learning (Beit Midrash)
- House of prayer (Beit Tefillah)
The Ethical Legacy Will draws on the first two pillars — gathering and learning — giving synagogues a new way to fulfill both.
The Ethical Legacy Will is a place of gathering. Sharing a common purpose, people can use the synagogue as a place to meet friends both old and new, deepening connections as they learn what they have in common. It can become a starting point for a deeply caring community, where people find support and friendship in times of celebration and sorrow.
The Ethical Legacy Will also reaches across generations, l’dor vador. Young people bring their comfort with technology to create videos with parents and grandparents — we teach the B’nei Mitzvah and Confirmation classes to conduct thoughtful interviews. Through these videos, families capture stories that might otherwise be lost, and the process itself builds real closeness, as parents and children learn deeply and intimately about each other along the way.
The Ethical Legacy Will is also a place of learning. Its ideas open opportunities to learn about oneself and draw on the great wisdom contained in the tradition — a platform for meaningful study into many facets of our rich tradition.
